Pine Ridge, known informally as Base Camp has been Wilderness Wind's
operational hub since the organization's founding in 1986. Located six
miles west of Ely, Minnesota, it is tucked back from the road and
surrounded by forest. During participants stay at Pine Ridge, they
sleep in platform tents and do most of their cooking over a fire. The
bath house is wheelchair accessible and is located close to the tents.
Pine Ridge is home to full-time and summer staff and is used for the
organization and operation of all Wilderness Wind's programs. Other
features of the Pine Ridge location include a yurt, a circular tent of
Mongolian origin, a swamp walk and a labyrinth which is used for
reflection and centering. The (600) foot swamp walk offers participants
an opportunity to view and learn from this moist ecosystem. Behind the
tents sites is a long ridge that offers explorers several vistas as
well as another perspective of the North woods ecosystems.
